Austrian-American economist Fritz Machlup first referred to the ‘knowledge industries’ as part of his concept of the knowledge economy. Unlike industries which rely on materials to manufacture products, the knowledge industries rely on human knowledge and effort to produce outputs. The knowledge industries are also highly reliant on technology in facilitating human effort.

The Quaternary Sector
Sometimes called the quaternary sector, the knowledge industries drive technological advancement and impact both short and long-term growth. The role which they play in driving progress has also accelerated since Machlup’s work particularly with the rise of networks, digital technology and AI.
